“Before hiking, there was rambling and without the stigma of achievement, any day is good as the next for an adventure. This has been my gospel, & I set forth many days with a topographical map but without plans, in search of hidden or forgotten places, not more than a couple hours from home. Never exactly sure of my direction, ready to be surprised by obscure roads & out-of-the-way general stores & outposts, grateful for each shitty cup of coffee or exceptional donut that comes my way, I’ve learned from some of the old ridge runners, to slip like the best of them into the woods unseen. Though not a deer hunter or angler myself, my aims align with those who feel most truly alive in the great outdoors. For we all belong to this beautiful mystery, & must learn to let it fill our hearts, as if our very lives depended on it, for they do. Come with me into the old pastures, clamber with me down ledges, sit on old stone walls at field’s edge & be rejuvenated by the wild waters always alive in our mind’s eye, as if placed there for the very first time.“ Ridgerunner
